Stedent Exercises - Chapter 1

  1. Using the material in Chapter 8 and texts from the Further Reading list, summarize
the various causes of movement in the atmosphere.

  2. The Carbon Dioxide Research Group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography
publishes a long-term dataset of monitored concentrations of carbon dioxide in
    the atmosphere (http://cdiac.esd.ornl.gov/trends/co2/sio-mlo.htm). Download
their dataset and use it to chart the change in annual mean concentration of carbon dioxide since 1958.

Remember to include the units of concentration on your graph. Describe the trend
in carbon dioxide concentrations that your graph shows and discuss the implications
of this for the global atmosphere.

  3. What are emissions inventories and why are they important?

  4. Access the article by Allen Lefohn, Janja Husar and Rudolf Husar called
‘Estimating Historical Anthropogenic Global Sulfur Emission Patterns for the
    Period 1850–1990’
(published in Atmospheric Environment 33 (1999)
3435–3444 and available on the internet at

    http://capita.wustl.edu/CAPITA/CapitaReports/GlobSEmissions/GlobS1850_1990.htm).

Use the information from this paper and from Chapter 8 to answer the following questions:

    (a) Why is sulphur dioxide important?

    (b) What are the global trends in sulphur dioxide emissions?

    (c) What are the relative contributions from different countries and different sources?

    (d) What uncertainties are there in estimating emissions of sulphur dioxide?

  5. What are the most pressing urban air quality issues in your country?
Carry out a review of literature sources and websites to help you
(hint: your local authority and national government websites would be a good
    place to start).
