Stedent Exercises - Chapter 1

  1. Choose a zonobiome from the list given on p.26 in Physical Geography. After
    researching that zonobiome in a library:

    (a) map its global distribution;
    (b) describe its chief climatic characteristics and its dominant vegetation;
    (c) explain how the vegetation is adapted to the climate; and
    (d) explain the chief human impacts upon it.

  2. Figure 2.7 in Physical Geography depicts the hydrological cycle under current
    climatic conditions.

    Redraw the diagram as it might appear during an ice age, noting which water
    fluxes change in magnitude.

  3. Select two soil-forming processes from those listed in Table 2.1.
    For each of these, find out the chemical or mechanical processes involved (some soil-forming processes may be a combination of chemical and mechanical processes) and
    their effects on soil form (e.g. example horizon formation) and soil properties.

  4. Plot the following data, which shows air temperature (oC) recorded at different
    heights (m):

  Height (m)   Temperature (oC)
  0  5
 10  3
 20  2
 30  4
 40  3
 50  2
 60

   Mark the temperature inversion on the diagram.

   What might cause such an inversion close to the ground?
