Stedent Exercises - Chapter 1

  1. Explore the World Resources Institute Earth Trends Information Portal (http://earthtrends.wri.org/) and then try the following tasks:
    (a) Under the Energy and Resources theme, go to Country Profiles. Choose one country from Europe, one from Africa and one from another continent and access the country profile. Next, use the profiles to compare the trends in per capita energy consumption for each country – what conclusions can you draw from this?

    (b) What proportion of total energy use comes from renewable sources in each country?

    (c) Still using your selected country profiles, select two other measures of resource use and compare.

    (d) Next go to the Population, Health and Human Well-being theme of the portal. Find the same countries and look at the trends in population for each one. What do you think the implications for patterns of resource use and population change will be for the future?

  2. Produce a list of the benefits and drawbacks that you think there are with the syndrome concept as a basis of characterizing human–environmental relationships.
Compare your answer to Exercise 1 for Chapter 14 and the article by Krings (2002) to give you some ideas.

  3. Table 15.3 (Top missions for global managers in the twenty-first century) lists some grand challenges for global management.
Building on what you now know of the issues and their scientific foundation, what advice can you offer for tackling these grand challenges?

  4. Write an essay to discuss the statement ‘There can be no such thing as a sustainable city’.
Make sure that you consider different points of view before coming to your own conclusion.
